INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

Ilia State University is actively engaged in global academic and educational processes and considers internationalization one of its key priorities. 

We strive to create a diverse, inclusive, and internationally oriented educational and research environment that enables students and academic staff to acquire, generate, and share knowledge with a strong global perspective.

This effort is supported by our wide network of significant international partnerships with leading universities and organizations worldwide, implemented through multidisciplinary research, joint programmes, innovative educational and institutional development projects, university-wide and field-specific collaborations, and academic exchange opportunities.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS OFFICE

International Relations Office (IRO), within the framework of Ilia State University’s internationalization strategy, works to strengthen cooperation with international partners and ISU’s engagement in international networks, supports faculty and student participation in exchange programmes, and fosters the development of joint educational and research initiatives.

IRO serves as a key interface between the university community and international partners.

International Relations Office

The mission of the International Relations Office (IRO) is to support the implementation of the goals defined by Ilia State University’s mission and strategy.

Specifically, with the aim of strengthening the institution, the Office coordinates activities related to the internationalization of teaching and research and contributes to enhancing the role of Ilia State University within the international academic and scientific community.

In line with ISU’s Internationalization Action Plan, IRO’s priority objectives include cooperation with international institutions, increasing the participation of faculty and students in exchange programmes, strengthening the ISU’s engagement in international networks, supporting the development of joint programmes, attracting and supporting international students, and more.

To promote the internationalization process, the activities of the International Relations Office cover the following areas:

  • Monitoring the implementation of Ilia State University’s internationalization strategy
  • Supporting the internationalization of academic programmes
  • Establishing and developing partnerships with higher education institutions abroad
  • Facilitating bilateral cooperation between Ilia State University and international partners
  • Coordinating the University’s diverse international meetings and events
  • Engaging students, researchers, administrative staff, and faculty in international mobility and exchange projects
  • Providing assistance to local and international students and staff during exchange program calls and subsequent stages
  • Supporting the development of a multicultural community within the University.

The growth of Ilia State University’s educational and research activities is evident in its strong performance in leading international academic rankings, which evaluate the quality and reputation of higher education and research worldwide.

Ilia State University ranks as the top university in the country in international rankings and stands out in the region as a dynamic and rapidly developing center for higher education and research. Its accomplishments are acknowledged both in overall university rankings and in specialized subject-specific rankings, where Ilia State University is listed among the world’s leading institutions across multiple disciplines.

In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, Ilia State University has consistently held the top position in Georgia in 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026.

The University demonstrates particularly strong performance in the quality of research and international collaboration.

In 2025, Ilia State University achieved notable success in three subject rankings:

  • Physical Sciences (excluding Biology): Ilia State University ranks 601+ among 1,447 institutions across 107 countries.
  • Social Sciences: Ilia State University ranks 601+ among 1,093 institutions across 100 countries.
  • Life Sciences: Ilia State University ranks 601+ among 1,143 institutions across 98 countries.

The 2026 ranking evaluated 911 universities across 94 countries based on the implementation of interdisciplinary and high-impact research.

THE’s Interdisciplinary Science Rankings are based on three main criteria:

  • Inputs (19%) – funding allocated for interdisciplinary research
    Process (16%) – institutional mechanisms and infrastructure promoting interdisciplinary collaboration
    Outputs (65%) – research volume, the number and quality of interdisciplinary publications, and global academic reputation

Ilia State University ranks first among Georgian universities in the U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities 2025–2026 ranking.

This ranking evaluates the top 2,250 educational institutions from over 100 countries based on 13 indicators. Notably, Ilia State University also placed 456th in the same ranking’s list of top universities in Asia. In the Physics subject ranking which includes fields such as particle and nuclear physics, mathematical physics, quantum physics, and theoretical physics, Ilia State University is listed among the world’s top 600 institutions.

Internationalization Goal #1: Internationalization of Learning and Teaching

By fostering an international, inclusive, diverse educational environment, the university ensures international cooperation and provides experience-based learning and teaching opportunities using global perspectives and modern resources. This approach aims to prepare students for contemporary challenges and contribute to developing an open and multicultural community.

Internationalization Goal #2: Internationalization of Research

Ilia State University aims to solidify its position as the region’s leading research university by supporting the internationalization of research and fostering global collaborations. The University is committed to implementing inter- and multi-disciplinary research with significant international impact, educating and integrating successful young scientists into the world’s advanced scientific research community, and contributing to the advancement of science both locally and globally.
